Not just for teens, this is...well...awesome...

I understand why teenage girls would like this movie--the thrilling rush of new found deep friendship tied together with nascent sexuality and all that comes with it...the defying of the confines of the world around them...the incredible power of unfettered creativity and self-delusional belief...

What's amazing is that a jaded thirty-something man like myself would consider it to be his favorite film of all time. Peter Jackson shows a deftness in handling interpersonal characterizations and blending in amazing special effects in a way that seems so natural...so fluid...that you while you're awed by what you see, you're not so aware of the process that you're distracted. The oh-so-1993 effect of "morphing" is used better here than any other film (save, perhaps, Terminator 2--but in that movie, the morphing WAS the film...when here, it is merely one element.)

The direction is exemplary. The cinematography is awe inspiring. The script is sharp. The acting...down the line...is superb. Melanie Lynskey delivers a brave performance--giddy, childish, frightening, sexual, clouded... She's everything Christina Ricci pretends to be. Kate Winslet--hyper-bright and wonderful...her performance here reminds you that her "Titanic" performance was "sunk" (sorry!) by the extremely poor dialogue she was given. Her character's overly cheerful demeanor is a mask that covers her disappointment in her parents--but it's extended so far that it no longer seems like a mask...it seems to be a force of nature that drags Lynskey's Pauline along for a dangerous ride...a ride that Winslet's Juliet is in no position to control. There are crisp performances from all of the supporting cast as well.

Jackson should be listed with Gilliam and even Lynch when it comes to directors who can achieve a glorious, if dark, vision. The fact that Jackson's movies (save for "Meet the Feebles") are mainstream accessible--in ways that Lynch, especially, could barely consider (although "The Frighteners" was painfully overlooked by the US market)--makes me wish that he'd try his hand at more mainstream material.

Imagine what a Peter Jackson "Titanic" would have been like...and compare that to what a James Cameron "Heavenly Creatures" would have been like and you get my point.

Sordid tales in a little town of the southern USA.

A marked gambler (Penn) on the run, comes to a little town in the middle of nowhere, south USA. A town filled with very unusual characters, sordid secrets and strange opportunities, that seem very appealing to this "Pat Poker" on the run, which desperately needs money to pay the idiotic, redneck town mechanic. Penn and Nolte are at the greatest level, and Lopez fills the requisites of her character. Beautiful piece of writing, with surprising plot twists which make way to a most brilliant ending, "Stone" style despair. A very misunderstood work by this brilliant, all-American director. Another piece of genuine America, with all her virtues and even more flaws, seen trough "stone" cold eyes...

Derek Vineyard is paroled after serving 3 years in prison for killing two thugs who tried to break into/steal his truck. Through his brother, Danny Vineyard's narration, we learn that before going to prison, Derek was a skinhead and the leader of a violent white supremacist gang that committed acts of racial crime throughout L.A. and his actions greatly influenced Danny. Intelligent Drama

Strong performances by Edward Norton & Edward Furlong really make this
film for me. The direction by Tony Kaye with his mixture of black &
white history contrasting with colourful reality is magic to absorb and
shows this film up to be what it is – a true American Classic,
ironically by a British director.

The film itself is about two brothers, Derek the elder and Danny the
younger adoring sibling. Derek has been in jail for three years after
killing a black youth who tried to rob the family; the nature &
brutality of the crime still shocks me to this day.

AHX tracks Derek's history through the first formation of racist
sentiment laid down by the father. These feeling of hate are
embedded when later his father is killed in the line of duty. Derek
becomes involved in the local Nazi movement, his intellect turned by
youthful rage into hate crimes and the rational that comes with Neo
Nazi propaganda.

The Nazi-tattoo sporting, egotistical, philosophical younger Derek is a
steam train waiting to crash, his propulsion to stardom is eventually
embodied when he takes the life of the young thief, the scene is very
apt as he calmly lies down and knows he will be a hero to his friends.

Without wanting to spoil the film Derek encounters change in the
prison, he meets a black man whom he works with and faces his own
demons inside, I will leave it there for those who want to be moved by
his transformation. Anyway, he comes out a new man and only wants to be
that new person, which means leaving the old crowd, leaving the
Anti-Jewish sepal he's been living with so long. The problem lies with
his brother who has become a little Derek, getting drunk and being
influenced like he was. Derek's cross to bear is that he can't change
his life without his brother coming with him and being on the right
side of humanity.

I think that this film is less about race and more about our ability to
change as individuals, the fact that we can become what and who we want
is a gift. Derek becomes the man he always wanted to be, he only wants
the same for his brother.

Kaye's use of black & white creates an atmospheric drama that builds
tension and has you feeling like a stung out piece of drum leather by
mid movie. I love the way that Kaye subtly uses quotes and
intellectualises the Nazi Stance, only to watch it being broken down by
the same man (Derek / Norton).

Norton is a joy to watch as is Gould and Furlong.

To sum up American History X is a powerful intelligent drama, which
provides plenty of discussion after the movie. This film should be on
every high school curriculum…

Much better than you might think

Now that the TMNT craze has been over for a few years due to the dumbing down of the original, show, the stupid live action show and lackluster followups to the original movie, I feel I can safely comment on this movie and not be accused of jumping on the bandwagon. The movie is a bit surprising, it is quite dark, there is swearing (a big no no in translating a popular kids TV show to the big screen), and some bloody fights, well bloody for the expected age audience. The tone really fits the original Eastman and Laird comic series which was excellent. And thats great, the last thing we need is a cheap cash-in on a popular comic. After TMNT and Batman what was the last good comic movie? Maybe the Mask, the Crow, or Blade. So a good comic movie is very rare thing and I think TMNT deserves a second look just because its tone was so different from what it could have been and eventually did become in TMNT 2 and 3. I'll be generous because I look with nostalgic eyes, I was 7 when I first saw the movie in 1990, and give it an 8/10.

Tough to take seriously...

when the first few scenes show video surveillance cameras mounted to the walls without any coaxial cables or power connected to the cameras. Similarly, the cameras are all monochrome (black & white) instead of color, even though the security office uses nice flat-screen monitors. (Yes, I'm in the business.) I have to agree, too, with the other reviewers who have pointed out that not many corporations hire people with criminal records specifically for their own security operations.

This is a very over-the-top movie, with some suspense thrown into the mix, but it is just totally unbelievable. I think it might actually make a nice subject for MST3K.

An absolutely tedious and toothless affair. Avoid!!

Considering that this film was supposed to tell the story about one of the most bizarre serial killers in history, it's absolutely amazing that the end result we get served is this tedious muck. Something is definitely wrong when you realize that the film you are watching easily can be labeled " a film for the whole family", a film the Hallmark channel would "proudly present." Instead of a thoroughly deep-dive into Mr. Fish's murky psyche, a proper probing into the mechanizations that drove this deranged specimen of a man, a both tell and show with the slaughter and cannibalizing of Grace Budd, what you get is a badly acted detective-story ( with film-noiresque monologue ), a lead that don't remotely look like Albert Fish, and a misplaced focus on the detective in charge. The gore is of course non-existent, and while this "tell, don't show" approach work excellently in films like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Dahmer, here it is sorely missed. Inexcusable. Not to mention that certain liberties is being taken in regards to what really happened.

Bottom line; if you want a scary film for the kiddies ( age 3-12 ), go for this one!! On the other hand, if you want a properly nasty horror-film about good old Albert, you better keep your fingers crossed for a director that truly have the courage to handle this dark material the way it deserves! Hopefully soon one will come along......

A jewel of a film: the kind that comes perhaps once a year

Every serious moviegoer enters each theater with the hope that this film will be that little gem that one can expect at most once a year (and some years it doesn't happen at all). This film is that little jewel; I was lucky enough to see it at its premier in the Berlinale. It asks the question, "what is a good man"? Can a man be good in some parts of his life and not at all good in others? In life, who becomes the ultimate arbiter of goodness? The film also introduces an interesting tension around traditional gender roles -- the husband/father expected to be the provider -- even while portraying seemingly modern women. This tension is an important driving force, in addition to the difficult challenge facing the main character. The resulting violence that occurs is at once completely believable and yet shocking; seemingly ancillary to the main plot is one scene of senseless violence against a street child that is quite breath-taking. There is a great symmetry to this movie, centering around a particular street corner on which that child hustles as a window-washer. We return to this place again and again, at different times and in different psychological states. Overall this film is masterfully crafted and acted with complex layers and much to reflect upon. I recommend it in the highest terms.
